Newborn Jaundice Screening
Jaundice is a yellow tone to a newborn’s skin and eyes. It means there is too much bilirubin in a baby’s blood, and it usually develops in the first 5 days of life. Babies are routinely checked for jaundice before discharge from the hospital.
Most babies have mild jaundice that resolves on its own within a week or two. In some cases, if the bilirubin level stays high, it can cause brain damage called kernicterus. At Brantford Pediatrics we are equipped to screen your baby’s bilirubin level without needing a blood sample.
Ask your doctor for a referral to Brantford Pediatrics if you or your doctor are concerned about jaundice with your newborn.

Depression and Anxiety
Depression is a mental health problem that leads to an endless feeling of sadness and a loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed. It affects how your child or teen thinks, feels and behaves, and it can cause emotional, functional and physical problems. Depression can occur at any time in life, and symptoms may be different between teens and adults.
Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health ailments. Everyone experiences stress and worry, but those with anxiety worry excessively about many things — including school, or the health and safety of a family member. All anxiety disorders share one common trait: prolonged, intense anxiety that is out of proportion to the present situation and affects a person’s daily life and happiness.

Hearing Screening
A hearing screening is a quick way to see how well your child hears — you either pass or fail the screening. If you pass, you do not need to do anything else. If you fail, more testing may be needed to see if there is hearing loss. A screening can be done at any age.
Most babies have a hearing screening before they leave the hospital. A screening should be performed if your child did not get one after birth, if you have concerns about their hearing, or if there is a speech delay.
